PiYo Day 46: Buns

Oh, my back. My silly, silly back.

I haven’t worked out in a couple of days; remember how I said I was going to get right back on track after Labor Day? It turned into the day after the day after Labor Day.

Not too shabby, all things considered.

Each day that went by without a workout, I felt my muscles and tendons and ligaments getting tighter. Like they were calcifying or turning from supple pink flesh into cold, grey stone. Like if I didn’t start moving soon, I would eventually just freeze in whatever position I happened to be in at the moment when the stone took over.

(On a not totally unrelated note, I think my Once Upon a Time binge may have kicked my imagination into overdrive.)

As much as I hate it, this is kind of my M.O. Whenever I’ve started a workout program, if I go hard core at it for a while and then take a break – even for a couple days – that tightening feeling sets in. I usually get scared and extend the break in the name of caution. And that’s usually when I injure myself and have to prolong the abstinence indefinitely.

So returning to PiYo today was a bit risky; my back felt fatigued, but I knew that if I didn’t do something to loosen myself up soon, it would only get worse. I ended up having to do a shortened version of the Buns workout (for some reason, I get much weaker when I’m down on all fours and extend my legs, so that portion of the workout was out of the question today).

I truly wonder whether I’ll ever be able to find a real balance; it seems that whenever I start to push, something pulls (pun intended – as always). Whenever I pull back, I feel a push to do more. Right when I think I’m on the right track, something veers me off course. I always find my way back, or come up with a new route, but the lack of consistency is damn exhausting.

So here’s to getting back on track – even if that track changes direction more often than the staircases at Hogwarts.

P.S. I’m in the middle of a severe Harry Potter binge; books, movies…I even registered on Pottermore. So if you’ve been wondering why I keep making Potter references, now you know. Feel free to join me at Platform 9¾…it’s a lot of fun up in my head right now.
